The board of intermediate and secondary education Lahore is one of the educational board located in the provincial headquarters in Punjab province of Pakistan. The ministry of education which is working under the government of Punjab is the organizing body of the board. The basic most responsibilities of the board is to conduct the annual SSC and HSSC examination in the jurisdiction. The board is one of the largest boards among the eight boards in the Punjab province and every year a large number of students appear in the examination.
From the very first day Pakistan came into being, the examination of the matriculation and intermediate level were under the University of the Punjab. University of the Punjab was the only prominent figure of education at the time of independence. Back in 1954 after the amendment of the Punjab University Act Ordinance, an institution was formed named as the Board of Secondary Education Punjab was established. The board was held responsible to take control of the secondary, intermediate and other classical languages examination from Punjab University. Board started working in 1955 and took the secondary and intermediate examination for the first time.
At the time of independence, the University of the Punjab was the organizing body for the matriculation and intermediate examination in the Lahore and other associated regions but in 1954 a need of a separate board was sensed as the university has the burden of conducting other examinations as well. The board was then established to give them the responsibility of Secondary and intermediate education and from the day one, the board is striving hard to fulfill their missions.
The board is working on a mission of providing the quality education to the residents in its jurisdiction. The board is looking forward to maintain an education system which is fair and transparent and is helpful to the students so that they can follow their dreams. The board wants to establish the education system of international standards.
When the board was formed it had a very wide range of territory which came under it for conducting examination. The jurisdiction of the board at the time of its foundation included the provinces of Punjab, Baluchistan, Azad Kashmir and Northern areas of Pakistan. Overseas candidates were also entertained as the board had established the examination centers in Kuwait and Kenya. The jurisdiction is that area which comes under the board’s responsibility and board is to conduct the annual examination of matriculation and intermediate in the following areas.
However the current jurisdiction of the Board of Intermediate and secondary education Lahore has all the districts of Lahore, Kasur, Okara , Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib.
In 1968, under the West Pakistan Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Multan & Sargodha) Ordinance No.XVII, two boards were established in Multan and Sargodha. This was necessary for the ever increasing amount of students who were to sit in exams every year. As the demand increased, Boards of Rawalpinidi and Gujranwala were also founded. Similarly more boards had to be founded with the increasing demand and for feasible handling of exams. At presently within the Punjab Province, eight boards are functioning.
The chairman of the board works as an operation manager of the board. He also chair all the meetings related to the plans and strategy of the board. He is accompanied by two more personnel’s namely the Secretary and the Controller of Examination.
However the governing body of the board which controls every kind of affair of the board is as follows.
The board’s working is a long process in which the schools and colleges from the jurisdiction are affiliated with the board. The institutes have to pay certain fees to the board to get them affiliated with the board. Board then starts registering the candidates for the examination. There are two types of candidates which are registered. First category is the regular students and the second are private students. Students have to pay the registration fee as well.
Once the students are registered, the board then starts the phase of paper setting. This section involves many things like date sheeting, allocating centers, hiring paper conducting staffs, paper setting etc. Then comes the phase of Paper conduction in which the board takes the examination on the pre scheduled dates. Last phase is the result declaration in which papers are marked, result is formulated and then is released on the internet and in gazettes.
Our vision is to promote education by conducting examination in such an environment which is fair, transparent and unbiased.
