Chakwal is one of the notable districts of the Punjab Province of Pakistan. The capital city of the district is Chakwal city. Previously it was the part of the Rawalpindi division but in 1985 it was declared as a new district.
The Chakwal district is subdivided into four tehsils named as Chakwal Tehsil, Kallar Kahar tehsil, Talagang Tehsil and Choa Saidan Shah Tehsil. The total area of the district is 6,524 square kilometers with the population of 1,083,725 people according to census of 1998. Majority of the population speak Dhani and Majhi dialect of Punjabi language. The district has Attock and Rawalpindi in North, Jhelum in the east, Khushab in its south and in the west, there is Mianwali. The southern side of the districts has salt range and includes Chail Peak which is the highest point of the Chakwal district. The terrain of the area is mainly hilly as it is at the beginning of the Potohar Plateau and Salt Range.
